Minister Óscar López promotes ethical AI governance in Mexico

Spanish Minister for Digital Transformation and Civil Service, Óscar López, visited Mexico to advocate for a “third digital way” between Europe and Ibero-America. During a lecture at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, López called for a global, humanist governance of artificial intelligence to build an innovative, competitive, and ethical ecosystem.

López warned that the global race for AI, semiconductors, and computing power is redefining the political landscape. He characterized the concentration of these technologies within a few countries and companies as an “alarming threat” to the digital and democratic sovereignty of states. He also highlighted risks such as disinformation, deepfakes, and the environmental impact of data centers.

In addition to his academic address, López visited the Mexican headquarters of Veridas, a Spanish technology firm specializing in digital identity and cybersecurity. Veridas currently processes over 50 million identity verifications annually in Mexico for major telecommunications and financial institutions, including Telcel, BBVA, and Santander, to combat fraud and money laundering.
