Daler Mehndi controversy sparks backlash against Uttarakhand minister

A controversy has erupted following an incident at the Siddhpeeth Maa Kunjapuri Tourism and Development Fair in New Tehri, Uttarakhand, where Cabinet Minister Subodh Uniyal interrupted a performance by singer Daler Mehndi. In a viral video, Uniyal questioned the singer’s ability to perform, alleging that Mehndi appeared disoriented and potentially inebriated.

Numerous figures from the Indian entertainment industry have come forward to defend Mehndi. His brother, singer Mika Singh, and actors Anupam Kher, Rajpal Yadav, and Sudesh Lehri have all rejected the allegations of alcohol consumption, stating that Mehndi does not drink. Supporters noted that the singer has been managing ongoing health issues and recovering from recent surgeries, suggesting his performance may have been affected by his physical condition rather than intoxication.

The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Uttarakhand Chief Minister, requesting that such matters be handled with sensitivity and professionalism rather than public reprimand. While most celebrities have condemned the public humiliation of the veteran artist, singer Sona Mohapatra noted that while respect is important, professional accountability to the audience remains a factor.
