Hanzala the sea turtle released in Antalya with satellite tracker

A green sea turtle named Hanzala has been released into the Mediterranean Sea in Antalya's Manavgat district following a successful rehabilitation process. As part of the ‘Green Sea Turtle Satellite Tracking Program,’ Hanzala has been fitted with a satellite tracking device to monitor migration routes and the distribution of sea grass beds.

The project is a collaborative effort involving the Antalya Governor's Office, the Zero Waste Foundation, Akdeniz University, Ege University, and the Association for the Protection of Sea Turtles, Mediterranean Seals, Sea Lilies, and Coasts (DEKAFOK). This initiative marks the first tracking project of its kind for green sea turtles using satellite technology.

Scientists aim to use the real-time data to map biodiversity and inform marine conservation strategies. Sea grasses, which are vital for oxygen production and serve as habitats for fish, are maintained by the grazing activities of these turtles. The program highlights the importance of reducing marine pollution, particularly plastic waste originating from urban and agricultural activities.
