Montenegro and Serbia implement agricultural market and environmental enforcement

In Montenegro, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management has ordered increased market surveillance following numerous citizen complaints regarding pellet availability. Reports indicate issues such as the refusal to sell packaged pellets, mandatory transport fees, and the withholding of stock for specific customers. While production in Montenegro is rising—with MONSTAT reporting an increase to over 118,000 tons for 2025—more than half of the 2024 production was exported, complicating domestic access despite government-set price caps.

In Serbia, agricultural and police inspections conducted a coordinated action against the illegal burning of crop residues. Six individuals were caught in the act, resulting in four arrests and two misdemeanor reports. The crackdown follows several fires that caused smoke-related traffic accidents involving 26 vehicles and 16 injuries. Authorities are using satellite monitoring to identify burned plots, and farmers found responsible may face a loss of eligibility for state subsidies for one to three years.
