Ministry of Energy examines extending electricity meter verification terms

The Ministry of Energy is considering extending the mandatory metrological verification periods for electronic electricity meters to reduce sector costs. Currently, three-phase electronic meters undergo verification every four years, while single-phase meters are checked every eight years.

Distribution system operators have proposed longer intervals to align with technological advancements and practices in several European countries. Operators estimate that extending these terms could save approximately 40 million lei per year, excluding VAT. These savings would stem from reduced costs for residential consumer tariffs and optimized verification of measuring transformers for non-residential consumers.

The Ministry is assessing the impact of these proposals to determine how much of the resulting savings can be passed on to consumers through reduced costs.
