Kalimantan forest fires trigger sanctions for six companies
The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry has imposed administrative sanctions on six companies holding forest utilization licenses (PBPH) following widespread forest and land fires in Kalimantan. The fires affected a total area of 1,511.55 hectares across West, Central, and East Kalimantan.
Among the sanctioned entities, PT MPK received the most severe penalties, including the suspension of its business license and government compulsion orders due to recurring and extensive fires on its land. The other five companies—PT WEL, PT FI, PT WSP, PT NES, and PT PSR—were issued government compulsion sanctions. PT WEL recorded the largest single area of fire at 760.51 hectares.
In response to the crisis, PT Mayawana Persada has deployed 170 personnel to combat fires in the Ketapang and Kayong Utara regencies of West Kalimantan. The Ministry has mandated that sanctioned companies implement improved fire control systems and undertake ecological restoration, particularly for peatlands, through canal blocking and rewetting processes.
