Indonesia Ministry of Forestry targets forestry crime and carbon trading

The Indonesian Ministry of Forestry is implementing new strategies to combat illegal forestry crimes and wildlife trafficking. Under the direction of Minister Raja Juli Antoni, the ministry is adopting a "multidoor" legal approach. This strategy involves collaborating with institutions such as the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the Financial Services Authority (OJK) to target organized crime networks, asset recovery, and the economic incentives driving these crimes through corruption, taxation, and financial sector investigations.

Director General of Forestry Law Enforcement Dwi Januanto Nugroho emphasized that effective enforcement must move beyond punishing field actors to dismantling larger criminal networks using forensic science and precise evidence. This effort aims to protect Indonesia's megabiodiversity and strengthen forest governance.

Simultaneously, the ministry is advancing a high-integrity carbon trading framework. The government is developing regulations, including a 2026 ministerial regulation, to ensure carbon trading is transparent and provides direct benefits to local communities while supporting national climate targets and sustainable forest management.
