Ministry of Health hosts forum in Brasília to boost medical production

The Industry Engagement Forum (IEF) took place in Brasília on August 20 and 21 to address challenges in the availability, sustainability, and affordability of medicines, vaccines, and health technologies in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Organized by the Brazilian Ministry of Health in partnership with the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Unitaid, the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), and the Global Coalition for Local and Regional Production, the forum brought together governments, industry leaders, and researchers. Fernanda De Negri, Secretary of Science, Technology, and Innovation in Health, emphasized Brazil's commitment to supporting production and developing local technological innovation capabilities.

Unitaid representative Robert Matiru identified several systemic bottlenecks, including regulatory hurdles, demand definition, advance purchasing, working capital, and market fragmentation. The forum aimed to identify these obstacles to better direct investments toward improving industrial and regulatory capacities.
