Minsa reports gastrointestinal issues account for up to 10% of emergency visits
The Ministry of Health (Minsa) has reported that between 5% and 10% of emergency room visits are due to gastrointestinal issues. These conditions, often caused by viral or bacterial infections, present symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
Vicente Oliver Paredes, Minsa’s national emergency coordinator, advised the public to reinforce hygiene practices, specifically frequent handwashing before eating and after using the bathroom. He also recommended verifying the sanitary conditions of food establishments and ensuring food handlers possess valid health certificates.
To manage symptoms and prevent dehydration, health officials suggest using water or oral rehydration salts as directed by medical professionals. Paredes issued a specific warning against self-medication, particularly when treating children.
