Ministry of Health reports three West Nile virus cases

The Ministry of Health has confirmed three positive cases of West Nile virus. Two patients were hospitalized following symptoms including fever, sore throat, and fatigue, though their conditions are reportedly improving. A third individual tested positive during routine blood work despite showing no symptoms.

Health officials noted that approximately 80 percent of infected individuals show no symptoms. The remaining 20 percent may experience flu-like symptoms such as high fever, headache, muscle aches, and vomiting. In less than 1 percent of cases, the virus can lead to severe neurological complications, including encephalitis or meningitis, particularly in elderly or immunocompromised populations.

As there is currently no vaccine or direct antiviral treatment for the virus, the Ministry emphasizes that the most effective prevention is avoiding mosquito bites. Recommendations include using insect repellent, wearing long-sleeved clothing, and eliminating standing water where Culex mosquitoes breed.
