Ministry of Health takes action after baby swap at American Hospital 2

The Ministry of Health has announced disciplinary measures following a baby swap incident at American Hospital 2 in Graçanicë, which reportedly occurred on March 18, 2026. An investigation by the Health Inspectorate revealed failures in identification and verification procedures during the handover of the infant to the mother.

In response to the incident and the subsequent handling of the case, several officials have faced consequences. The inspector in charge of the case has been referred to the Disciplinary Commission, while an archive official received a written warning. Additionally, officials within the Health Inspectorate received verbal warnings due to identified deficiencies in their handling of the investigation.

Health Minister Arben Vitia stated that no negligence will be tolerated by responsible institutions. The investigation also noted that while the nurse involved held a valid work license, she was not registered in the Department of Licensing and Accreditation (DLA) system. Vitia urged citizens to contact the Ministry directly if they are dissatisfied with the actions taken by the Health Inspectorate.
