Ministry of Justice opens applications for EU Court judge
The Ministry of Justice has opened applications to find a successor for Nuno Piçarra as a judge at the Court of Justice of the European Union. The application period remains open until September 21.
Candidates must demonstrate independence and meet the necessary legal requirements for high-level judicial functions or be recognized legal experts. The selection process involves an evaluation panel that will review applications, conduct hearings for qualified candidates, and propose three suitable individuals. Following this, the candidates will be heard by the Commission on European Affairs of the Assembly of the Republic before the Government makes the final selection.
Nuno Piçarra has held the position since October 2018, with his mandate officially ending in October 2024. He will remain in office until a successor is appointed. The Court of Justice of the European Union, based in Luxembourg, ensures that EU law is interpreted and applied consistently across all Member States.
