Ministry of Public Works builds 375 sanitation units in North Sumatra

The Indonesian Ministry of Public Works is constructing 375 sanitation infrastructure units in North Sumatra through the 2026 Community-Based Infrastructure (IBM) Sanitation Program. The initiative aims to improve access to proper sanitation while providing economic benefits by employing local workers through labor-intensive methods.

The program includes Community-Based Sanitation (Sanimas) and Religious Education Institution Sanitation (LPK). Construction is distributed across several areas, including Deli Serdang, Serdang Bedagai, Medan, Tebing Tinggi, Simalungun, and Padang Lawas.

In Deli Serdang, the project involves 207 Sanimas units and one LPK unit, while Serdang Bedagai includes 161 Sanimas units and two LPK units. Other locations will each receive one LPK unit. Sanimas facilities consist of bathrooms, grease traps, septic tanks, and infiltration wells, while LPK facilities include toilets, handwashing stations, ablution areas, laundry facilities, and wastewater treatment buildings.
