Indonesia Ministry of Social Affairs investigates gambling links in welfare data

The Indonesian Ministry of Social Affairs is addressing two major issues: significant shifts in the National Single Social and Economic Data (DTSEN) deciles and widespread online gambling involvement.

Minister Saifullah Yusuf explained that recent fluctuations in DTSEN deciles resulted from a national data consolidation process, including the integration of 12 million new data points from the BKKBN. He clarified that these changes are dynamic and do not automatically lead to the immediate removal of social assistance recipients, as a verification and appeal process remains available.

Simultaneously, the government is cracking down on online gambling. Data from the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK) indicates that over 1.4 million social assistance recipients are under investigation for suspected gambling activity. In Bekasi Regency, approximately 20,000 recipients have already been deactivated. In Solo, roughly 2,250 beneficiary families have had their assistance blocked.

Furthermore, the Ministry is investigating approximately 1,900 of its own employees suspected of using official funds or being involved in online gambling transactions. An internal audit by the Inspectorate General is expected to conclude by the end of September 2026, with severe penalties, including dishonorable discharge, facing those found guilty of misusing state funds.
