Ministry of Social Development confirms security guard cuts

The Ministry of Social Development (MSD) is proceeding with plans to reduce the number of security guards at service centres, despite opposition from frontline staff. The decision involves reducing the number of guards from three to two at 20 locations.

A survey conducted by the Public Service Association (PSA) revealed that 74% of workers at the impacted centres believe the reduction poses a risk to their safety. PSA National Secretary Fleur Fitzsimons criticized the move as “irresponsible,” stating that the ministry is willfully ignoring genuine concerns regarding health and safety.

The decision has drawn comparisons to a violent incident in Ashburton 12 years ago, where a receptionist and a caseworker were shot and killed. Critics, including the partner of one of the victims, have argued that the existing security measures have been effective and should remain in place, particularly as rising unemployment and cost-of-living pressures increase stress levels for those visiting MSD offices.
