Minja Subota: The life and legacy of the iconic Yugoslavian TV host

Minja Subota, the legendary television host and musician beloved across former Yugoslavia, was born Milan Subota on November 8, 1938, in Sarajevo. While widely known by his nickname Minja, his legal name was Milan, a name given to him by his parents, Ante and Desanka.

Subota's family roots trace back to a Serbian Orthodox family from Dalmatia that resided in Petrov Polje for over 600 years. Following World War II, his family relocated to Belgrade. After studying electrical engineering in Belgrade, he transitioned into a prominent media career. He began his professional journey at Radio Belgrade, where he initially recorded interviews before moving to television.

He became a cultural icon through highly popular children's programming, including 'Muzički tobogan' and 'Igre bez granica.' His work often involved collaborations with renowned poets such as Duško Radović and Ljubivoj Ršumović. Beyond his work for children, he also participated in live television programs like 'Od glave do pete' alongside Milovan Ilić Minimaks.
