Minneapolis and Robbinsdale area face rising property tax levies

Property owners in the Minneapolis area face potential tax increases following recent decisions by local government and school district boards.

The Minneapolis Board of Estimate and Taxation has set a maximum property tax levy increase of 11.87% for the upcoming year. This cap exceeds Mayor Jacob Frey’s initial proposal of 11.3%. City leaders cited rising municipal service costs and unbudgeted police spending as primary drivers. The Minneapolis Police Department has requested a $20 million funding increase, including $13 million for overtime, following admissions of fund mismanagement and overuse.

In the west metro, the Robbinsdale Area Schools board approved a maximum tax levy hike of 8.68%. This increase is intended to address deferred maintenance. Additionally, the district is seeking voter approval for a bond referendum as large as $413 million, which could further impact resident tax burdens.
