Minneapolis budget proposals address housing and park funding

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has introduced a $2.3 billion budget proposal that includes efforts to increase affordable housing and addresses funding for city services. As part of his housing strategy, Frey has revived the proposal to allow the construction of four-unit buildings, a concept that previously faced significant local controversy.

Simultaneously, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is advocating for a 5.86% tax levy increase to support a $160 million budget. This request exceeds Mayor Frey’s proposed 2.5% increase. Board President Tom Olsen stated that the higher levy is necessary to provide full service for the city, citing needs for environmental stewardship, maintenance, and youth programs. The mayor has suggested that park board administrative costs, such as HR and finance, could be consolidated to reduce the budget requirements.
