Minneapolis faces budget cuts to housing and violence prevention
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey’s proposed budget faces scrutiny as it includes significant cuts to several municipal programs. The proposal includes a reduction of nearly $2.7 million for violence interrupters, a program currently under review following a city audit that identified a lack of oversight within the Neighborhood Safety Department.
Additionally, the city’s Affordable Housing Trust Fund is projected to receive $15.5 million in the proposed 2027 budget. This represents the lowest funding level for the program since 2022 and marks the third consecutive year of decreases. Housing advocates and city officials note that the fund is a critical tool for leveraging other government resources to complete multifamily rental developments.
The Minneapolis City Council is scheduled to vote on the budget in December.
