Minneapolis father and son charged in massive tax fraud scheme
A father and son from the Minneapolis area, LaMar Javis Burgess and LaMar Dazjar Burgess, have been accused of filing 300 fraudulent federal income tax returns between June 2022 and October 2024.
According to court records, the defendants filed false returns for themselves and others to claim millions in illegitimate refunds. This included claiming refundable sick and family leave tax credits intended for self-employed individuals unable to work due to COVID-19, as well as other refundable tax credits in 2022. The pair reportedly solicited names, Social Security numbers, and bank information from others, charging up to $10,000 per filing to facilitate the theft from taxpayers.
