Minneapolis Mayor proposes budget cuts for violence interrupters

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has proposed budget cuts for the city’s violence interrupter programs in his 2027 budget proposal. While Frey described the programs as “noble” and led by “talented community leaders,” he argued they have failed to demonstrate sufficient results for taxpayers. He cited concerns regarding accountability, compliance, and a lawsuit alleging improper spending as primary reasons for the reduction in funding.

In contrast, Frey intends to increase funding for the Community Safety Ambassador program, noting “early signs of success.”

Violence interrupters, such as those at T. O. U. C. H Outreach, operate under the Cure Violence Global model, which treats violence as a public health issue. These individuals use community connections to de-escalate tensions and prevent conflict. Muhammad Abdul-Ahad, executive director of T. O. U. C. H Outreach, questioned the impact of removing such a pivotal public safety response from the city.
