Minneapolis Public Schools considers closing up to 16 schools

Minneapolis Public Schools is considering transformation plans that could result in the closure or consolidation of up to 16 schools. Superintendent Dr. Lisa Sayles-Adams presented the proposals to address a $40 million budget shortfall, declining enrollment, and an inefficient building footprint. If implemented, the changes could affect approximately 12 percent of the district's 29,000 students.

Minneapolis school board chair Collin Beachy stated that no final decisions have been made and that the plans may change based on community feedback. He noted that while the district must act to avoid further cuts to teachers and programming, doing nothing is not a sustainable option.

Local parents have expressed significant concerns regarding the potential impact of these closures. Residents warned that closing schools could lead to neighborhood disinvestment, decreased property values, and the loss of community stability, arguing that the reorganization could negatively affect entire areas regardless of whether families have children in the district.
