Minneapolis Public Schools proposes closing up to 16 schools
The Minneapolis Public School Board is preparing to respond to community feedback regarding a proposal to close as many as 16 schools. The district is facing a $40 million budget shortfall and declining enrollment, with some schools reportedly operating at nearly half capacity.
Superintendent Lisa Sayles-Adams has presented three transformation plans to the board, which aim to balance the budget through mergers and boundary changes. While the district suggests most students will not need to switch schools, the proposals have faced criticism from parents and staff who argue that closures do not address underlying issues.
The potential closures include several institutions, such as Loring Elementary, Bethune Elementary, and Wenonah Elementary. The board may vote on these measures as early as November, with any resulting changes slated to begin in the 2027-2028 school year.
