Minnesota autism centers under investigation for fraud

The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) is investigating two agencies, the Milestone Development Center and the Spectrum Therapy Center, following allegations of fraud. Both centers are operated or associated with Nimco Ahmed, a longtime Democratic activist who recently appeared in a viral video alongside Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan.

In the video, Flanagan, wearing a hijab, defended the Somali community and identified Ahmed as a friend of nearly 25 years. The DHS has terminated both agencies from participating in the Medicaid program as part of the Minnesota Revalidate 2026 process, which verifies agency credentials and regulatory compliance. Both agencies have appealed this termination.

Reports indicate that Ahmed has historical ties to Minnesota Democratic politics, including working on Senator Amy Klobuchar’s first Senate campaign in 2006. Ahmed has denied any wrongdoing and has accused media outlets of bias regarding the allegations. No criminal charges have been filed, and the full scope of the DHS investigation has not been disclosed.
