Minnesota bans various wild animals as pets
Minnesota maintains strict regulations regarding the ownership of exotic and wild animals. According to state guidelines and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), several species are prohibited from being kept as pets.
Prohibited animals include all members of the Felidae family, such as tigers, lions, cougars, leopards, cheetahs, ocelots, and servals, though domestic cats and recognized multibreed varieties are permitted. Other banned animals include bears, non-human primates like monkeys and gorillas, skunks, and deer.
Additionally, pure wolves are illegal to own throughout the United States as they are classified as an endangered and regulated species. Wild snakes are also protected under Minnesota law.
