Minnesota cannabis market reaches $250 million in first year
Minnesota’s cannabis market has reached $250 million in combined adult-use and medical sales during its first year of legal operations. Adult-use sales accounted for approximately $150 million, while medical cannabis sales totaled $100 million.
According to the Office of Cannabis Management (OCM), the state generated $45.6 million in tax revenue over a 10-month period from these sales and lower-potency hemp products. The market is seeing a significant increase in supply; the state has issued 95 new cultivation licenses this summer, bringing the total number of licensed cultivators to 102 with nearly 500,000 plants currently in the tracking system.
Social equity remains a central component of the state's business model, with the OCM estimating that 86% of business licenses have been awarded to verified social equity businesses. However, industry consultants note that high consumer prices and a lack of investment capital remain challenges for many small-scale and social equity operators.
