Minnesota churches face legal battles over ICE surveillance

Legal battles involving Twin Cities churches and immigration enforcement continue to impact faith communities in Minnesota months after a federal surge in immigration operations.

One case involves a Minneapolis Baptist church seeking a government reprimand after alleging that federal authorities spied on protest-related activities on its property. In a separate matter, more than three dozen protesters are seeking the dismissal of charges following a disruption of a worship service at a St. Paul church, where one of the pastors also served as a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) official.

The tension follows a period of intense immigration operations that saw daily confrontations between protesters and federal law enforcement. While visible ICE activity has decreased in some areas, such as near Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, local clergy maintain a stance of defiance. Rev. Ingrid Rasmussen stated that her church intends to remain a sanctuary for many people.

These legal challenges arise as the Trump administration granted agents increased leeway to conduct arrests at houses of worship, prompting dozens of religious groups to file lawsuits.
