Minnesota Cold Weather Rule to protect residential heating services
Minnesota's Cold Weather Rule (CWR) is set to take effect on October 1st, providing legal protections for residential customers against the disconnection of natural gas or electricity used as a primary heat source. The rule remains in place through April 30th.
To qualify for these protections, residents must establish a payment plan with their utility provider that is deemed reasonable based on their financial circumstances. Eligible households may be able to arrange payments as low as 10% of their monthly income toward energy bills. The protections apply to both homeowners and renters, provided the individual's name is on the utility account.
Xcel Energy, a major utility provider in the state, is encouraging residents facing financial difficulties to contact them early to arrange payment plans and explore assistance options available through local and state agencies.
