Minnesota communities debate data center regulations and impacts
Communities in Minnesota are engaging in public discourse regarding the development and regulation of data centers. In Eagan, the city is hosting community input sessions and an online survey as part of a one-year moratorium on data center development. This moratorium, which began in February, restricts new developments using more than 20 megawatts of electricity and limits upgrades to existing facilities above 9 megawatts, while also prohibiting centers within 500 feet of residential areas.
In southern Minnesota, residents and organizers from groups such as Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate and Stop the Pine Island Data Center held information sessions to discuss potential health and environmental risks. Concerns raised include water pollution and its potential links to various health conditions. While some political figures, including Governor Tim Walz, have encouraged citizens to seek more information on the technology, local organizers are calling for moratoriums to allow for further research and informed decision-making by residents and officials.
