Minnesota Democratic Senate Primary Highlights Progressive‑Moderate Rift

U.S. Rep. Angie Craig and Minnesota Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan are contesting the Democratic Senate primary for the seat vacated by Sen. Tina Smith. The Aug 11, 2026 primary has become a focal point for the growing clash between progressive and moderate forces in the Upper Midwest.

Flanagan, backed by Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren, accused “secretive dark‑money groups and special interests” of trying to elect Craig, who is supported by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries. She said, “What we are facing right now in our party … is the very folks who are standing in the way of the things that people need to be able to afford their lives, who are Democrats, are funded by these corporate special interests.” Craig countered that Flanagan herself raised corporate funds while leading the Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association and warned, “The coalition we’re building is people in Minnesota who understand that in order to stop Donald Trump, we’ve got to win elections.”

The primary is seen as a bellwether for similar contests in Michigan and Wisconsin, where progressive challengers also face establishment‑backed moderates. Party leaders fear the outcome could shape the Democrats’ strategy ahead of the 2028 presidential election and influence control of both chambers of Congress.
