Minnesota DNR issues cold-water safety warnings for autumn

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued a cold-water safety reminder for anglers, hunters, and boaters as autumn temperatures drop and waterfowl hunting season begins. Falling water temperatures significantly increase the risk of hypothermia, which can quickly incapacitate even strong swimmers.

Authorities warned that the seasonal decrease in recreational boaters may lead to longer rescue times and a higher likelihood that cries for help go unheard. To mitigate these risks, the DNR recommends wearing foam life jackets rather than inflatable models, distributing weight evenly in watercraft, and monitoring weather changes closely.

Additional safety precautions include carrying communication devices and sharing travel plans, including destinations and expected return times, with others before departing.
