Minnesota educational institutions face budget and enrollment challenges
Educational institutions in Minnesota are facing significant financial challenges. St. Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is considering midyear staffing cuts due to a budget shortfall caused by lower-than-expected enrollment. The district reported having several hundred fewer students than anticipated, noting that changes in immigration and fewer new families settling in the community have impacted numbers. The St. Paul Federation of Educators has launched a petition protesting potential cuts to English learner educators, arguing such moves would affect vulnerable students.
Separately, Minnesota State is considering a proposal to reallocate up to $25 million annually over the next four years from its two-year colleges to support financially unstable universities. If approved, St. Cloud State University and Bemidji State University would receive approximately $15 million to address low cash reserves. This stopgap measure aims to manage a $31.5 million systemwide deficit, though the plan has faced criticism from students and employees.
