Minnesota gang violence becomes key election issue
Republican candidates in Minnesota are centering their campaigns on rising gang violence in the Twin Cities, specifically targeting Somali youth gangs. The violence, which includes recent shootings near high schools and significant recoveries of shell casings in suburban neighborhoods, has prompted the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to establish a new task force to address the issue.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Lisa Demuth and U.S. Senate candidate Michele Tafoya have both criticized the current administration, blaming Democratic leadership for a “soft-on-crime” approach and insufficient funding for law enforcement. Former state trooper John Nagel has also criticized Representative Ilhan Omar and other Democratic officials, questioning their response to the escalating incidents in the region.
