Minnesota Golden Gophers Adopt Norway's Viking Row Tradition for 2026 Season

The Minnesota Golden Gophers announced that they will incorporate Norway’s iconic “Viking Row” fan celebration into their home games for the 2026 college football season. The tradition, first seen during Norway’s quarter‑final run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, features players forming a row in front of supporters to the beat of two drums after each win. Minnesota’s large Norwegian‑American community and the state’s NFL franchise, the Vikings, inspired the adoption.

Coach PJ Fleck enters his 10th year with the Gophers, aiming to improve on a 7‑5 record from the previous season. The team will open the 2026 schedule on September 3 against Akron and faces road games at Penn State and Indiana, among other matchups. Star forward Erling Haaland was highlighted for his seven goals in the World Cup, underscoring the Norwegian connection.
