Minnesota law enforcement agencies launch partnership to combat gang violence

More than 40 federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies have formed a new partnership to combat gang and group violence across Minnesota. The collaboration follows a series of shootings in the Twin Cities metro area, including incidents in Bloomington and Eden Prairie. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) stated that the framework will leverage existing resources from dozens of agencies to address recent violence, which court documents have linked to retaliatory cycles involving Somali gangs.

In response to the violence, a community town hall led by State Senator Zaynab Mohamed brought together Somali-American police officers and community members to discuss prevention strategies. Proposed solutions included increased mentorship, rehabilitation, improved accountability, and strengthening trust between the Somali community and law enforcement. Officers emphasized the importance of parental involvement and monitoring to prevent youth from becoming involved in gang activity.
