Minnesota officials report federal halt in evidence sharing
Minnesota state officials have filed court documents stating that the federal government has ceased sharing evidence regarding the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti. The shootings, involving federal officers during an immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, are currently under investigation by state authorities.
While the federal government had begun transferring materials such as body camera footage and hard drives in July, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty reported that the process was paused indefinitely in September. State prosecutors are seeking access to officers' cell phones and interview recordings to conduct an independent investigation.
The Justice Department has argued that it maintains the discretion to decline sharing information with state authorities, citing Touhy regulations. Conversely, Minnesota officials argue that the federal government has provided no legal basis for obstructing the state's criminal investigation.
