Minnesota PBS to integrate KSMQ as regional hub following budget cuts

Minnesota PBS, formerly known as TPT, has announced that KSMQ will become a regional hub for the organization effective September 1. This restructuring follows significant federal funding cuts to public broadcasting, which have placed many rural stations in difficult financial positions.

During a recent Austin City Council meeting, Ward 3 member Laura Helle expressed disappointment regarding the lack of public transparency leading up to the decision. The transition involves shifting the city’s lease and use agreement to Minnesota PBS.

According to Minnesota PBS General Counsel Shari Aberle, KSMQ was among the most severely impacted stations in the state, facing a 40% budget reduction due to the nationwide decrease in federal support.
