Minnesota political campaigns face scrutiny over controversial advertisements

Campaign advertisements in Minnesota are facing criticism for their accuracy and methods. In the 1st congressional district race, incumbent Brad Finstad has released ads linking challenger Jake Johnson to Governor Tim Walz. Critics have raised concerns that an edited image in the ad, which replaces a small business owner with Walz, may violate Minnesota’s political deepfake laws.

Simultaneously, Jake Johnson’s campaign has targeted Finstad regarding a $20,000 donation from the Chinese-owned corporation Syngenta and his voting record on foreign farmland ownership. Finstad’s campaign has countered by questioning Johnson’s financial ties to Walz.

In a separate matter, advertisements attacking Attorney General Keith Ellison regarding the Feeding Our Future fraud case have come under review. The ads highlight a 2021 meeting where Ellison was recorded expressing frustration with state agencies investigating the fraud, with critics suggesting his comments indicated sympathy toward the operators involved.
