Charlotte Hornets trade LaMelo Ball to Minnesota Timberwolves

On June 25 the Charlotte Hornets completed a four‑team, eight‑player deal that sent star point guard LaMelo Ball and guard Josh Green to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Charlotte received forward Naz Reid, an unprotected 2033 first‑round pick, three second‑round picks, three first‑round pick swaps (2028‑2030) and a large trade exception.

Hornets president of basketball operations Jeff Peterson said the move reflects a long‑term strategy: “the goal is to get to the playoffs, stay there and eventually contend for championships,” not merely a play‑in spot. He cited Ball’s injury history and the need for roster flexibility, noting the new assets give depth, draft capital and financial leeway.

Peterson acknowledged fan disappointment, stating he loves Ball and understands the backlash, but argued the trade aligns with the franchise’s assessment after a 44‑38 season that rose from 19 wins yet still missed the playoffs. The Hornets plan to build around the remaining young core, including Kon Knueppel and Brandon Miller.
