Minnesota Timberwolves seek public funding for new arena

The Minnesota Timberwolves and Lynx are shifting their strategy for a new arena, moving away from previous claims of entirely private financing toward a model that may include public assistance. Timberwolves CEO Matt Caldwell reaffirmed the franchises are ‘100% committed’ to building a new venue in Minnesota, noting that ownership intends to work with Minneapolis, Hennepin County, and state officials as the project develops.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey indicated he expects a ‘substantial public-private partnership in some form’ as discussions regarding a replacement for the Target Center accelerate. This marks a notable change from earlier stances held by ownership, which suggested the project would be funded solely through private investments and fundraising.

The arena debate coincides with a major shift in team ownership. Marc Lore recently agreed to sell most of his controlling stake in the franchises to California billionaire Marc Stad in a transaction valued at approximately $4.5 billion. Alex Rodriguez remains a part of the ownership group following the transition.
