Minnesota Twins face catcher transition following Mitch Garver retirement

Former Minnesota Twins catcher Mitch Garver has officially announced his retirement from Major League Baseball after a 10-year career. Garver, a former ninth-round pick, was a key member of the 2019 Twins ‘Bomba Squad’ that set a major league record for home runs in a single season. His career included a Silver Slugger award and a World Series title with the Texas Rangers.

The retirement leaves the Twins facing significant decisions regarding their catching depth. Veteran Ryan Jeffers is entering free agency with a projected market value of approximately three years and $39.7 million.

To fill potential gaps, the organization may look to prospects such as Khadim Diaw, who has shown versatility by playing outfield in addition to catching at the Double-A level, or Vahn Lackey, a top-ranked prospect. The front office must now determine whether to re-sign Jeffers or transition to younger talent for the 2027 season.
