Minnesota Vikings face uncertainty over J. J. McCarthy's future

Speculation regarding the future of Minnesota Vikings quarterback J. J. McCarthy continues following his loss of the starting role to Kyler Murray. Reports suggest that if the Vikings pursue a trade for McCarthy, they may seek conditional draft picks based on playing time to mitigate risks associated with moving a young player.

Financial and roster constraints have influenced the team's decision to retain McCarthy rather than releasing him. Under collective bargaining agreement rules, cutting McCarthy would have required the Vikings to pay approximately $4.85 million in remaining contract guarantees. Additionally, the team reportedly had no intention of losing the former No. 10 overall pick for nothing, noting his positive standing within the locker room.

McCarthy’s tenure has been marked by injury challenges, including a knee injury that sidelined his rookie season and a recent ankle sprain. In 2025, he appeared in 10 games, recording 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, alongside 181 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
