Minnesota Vikings quarterback battle heats up with Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings entered training camp with a high‑profile quarterback competition between former Arizona Cardinals starter Kyler Murray and rookie J.J. McCarthy. Coach Kevin O’Connell said he will use the camp and preseason games to decide the starter, emphasizing transparency about the contest.

Former Vikings wideout Adam Thielen called the situation a “win‑win,” noting the team is not paying Murray a large salary and that the competition could push both quarterbacks to improve. Thielen praised McCarthy’s work ethic and Murray’s talent, saying the duo could give the offense a new dimension alongside star receiver Justin Jefferson. Murray, on a “prove‑it” deal, posted a 92.2 passer rating, 20,460 yards, 121 touchdowns and 60 interceptions in 87 games with the Cardinals, and could earn a larger contract if he performs well in Minnesota.
