Minnesota Vikings name Kyler Murray starting quarterback
The Minnesota Vikings have officially named Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback for the 2026 NFL season. The decision, announced by head coach Kevin O’Connell, relegates former first-round pick J. J. McCarthy to the backup role.
McCarthy, who expressed disappointment regarding the decision, stated that the competition was “out of my control” but emphasized his commitment to working hard and staying ready for when his “number’s called.” He also reiterated his desire to remain with the Vikings organization.
The decision follows a period of uncertainty for the team. While Murray brings veteran experience, reports noted his inconsistency during training camp. McCarthy, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back from an injury-marred 2025 season in which he made 10 starts. The team's preseason depth chart lists McCarthy as the primary backup behind Murray, with veteran Carson Wentz also on the roster.
