Minnesota Vikings weigh quarterback battle between Kyler Murray and JJ McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings are evaluating two quarterbacks for the starting role. Former No. 1 overall pick Kyler Murray, signed after his release from the Arizona Cardinals, is competing with first‑round rookie JJ McCarthy, the 10th overall pick in the 2024 draft. Coach Kevin O’Connell has split practice reps between the two players, saying a decision will be made before the end of preseason. Wide receiver Justin Jefferson praised McCarthy’s recent “impactful” improvement, noting he has become “more intelligent” in his approach. Murray, who threw two interceptions during a 7‑on‑7 drill, said the limited reps are the toughest part of his integration. Murray is under contract for one season and will become a free agent next summer, while the Vikings hold a fifth‑year option on McCarthy’s rookie contract that must be decided by May 1, 2028.
