Minocqua Brewing Co. faces closure after Wisconsin revokes alcohol permits
Minocqua Brewing Co. faces potential closure of its Madison, Wisconsin taproom following the revocation of its brewing permits by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue (DOR). The owner, Kirk Bangstad, indicated the location will likely shut down by the end of the year while the company contests the decision.
The DOR revoked permits for both the Minocqua and Madison locations, alleging that the brewery transported beer from Illinois without the necessary permits and failed to make required tax payments. The department stated it is dedicated to the “fair and consistent enforcement of alcohol beverage regulations” and noted that the revocation will not take effect until the company’s appeal process is complete. A hearing for the appeal is scheduled for November 18.
Bangstad has disputed the state’s allegations, claiming the brewery is being targeted due to its political messaging. The company has previously drawn attention for social media posts expressing anti-Trump sentiments, including a promise of free beer on the day former President Donald Trump dies.
