Kumamoto earthquake magnitude 7.1 tsunami advisory power outages JR Kyushu suspension

A shallow magnitude 7.1 (USGS later revised to 6.8) earthquake hit Kumamoto Prefecture on Kyushu island at 16:27 local time on 28 July 2026. The hypocenter was about 10 km deep and the maximum Shindo intensity recorded was 7. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami advisory for the Ariake and Yatsushiro coasts with waves expected up to one metre, but the warning was lifted after no tsunami was observed.

At least 50 people were injured and taken to hospitals; twelve residential buildings collapsed, four of which trapped occupants. Power outages affected roughly 45‑48 000 households. JR Kyushu suspended Shinkansen high‑speed services and other local rail lines for safety checks. The Nuclear Regulation Authority reported no abnormalities at nearby Sendai, Genkai or Ikata nuclear plants. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi ordered ministries to assess damage and mobilised the Self‑Defense Forces for rescue and relief operations.
