Minor Summer Jobs Expanding in Serbia and Croatia

Serbia's labour law permits individuals aged 15 and older to work, provided they obtain parental permission and a medical certificate and are excluded from hazardous occupations. The Constitution bans any employment of children under 15. Young workers may be employed in hospitality, tourism, sales, IT, customer support and similar sectors, either under a standard employment contract or a civil‑law engagement.

In Croatia, the city of Zadar hires high‑school and university students aged 16 or older to direct traffic at three of the city's busiest intersections during the summer. About twelve participants work in two‑person shifts, earning up to €1,200 for the season. They receive annual training, alternate morning and afternoon periods, and report mixed experiences ranging from appreciation by drivers to occasional disrespect.
