Minoxidil identified as effective treatment for hair loss
Dermatologist Dr. Tracy Evans, medical director of Pacific Skin and Cosmetic Dermatology, has identified minoxidil as a significant treatment for preventing hair loss in both men and women. Originally used to treat high blood pressure, minoxidil promotes longer and thicker hair by increasing blood flow to the hair follicles, ensuring a higher supply of oxygen, nutrients, and growth factors.
Dr. Evans noted that the medication works by modulating the hair growth cycle, specifically shortening the resting (telogen) phase and extending the active growth (anagen) phase. Users typically see improvements within six months to one year. Minoxidil is available in various forms, including foams, serums, and oral preparations.
For women, minoxidil offers an advantage over hormonal treatments like oral spironolactone because it does not affect the menstrual cycle. While generally considered safe, Dr. Evans noted that the medication does have certain potential side effects.
