Mate Mišo Kovač honored with mass farewell at Poljud Stadium

Thousands of fans and colleagues gathered at Poljud Stadium in Split to bid a final farewell to legendary Croatian singer Mate Mišo Kovač. The event, organized by HNK Hajduk, Torcida, and the Croatian Music Union, saw over 34,000 attendees participate in a musical tribute.

During the ceremony, prominent musicians including Giuliano, Jole, Mladen Grdović, and Alen Nižetić performed Kovač’s greatest hits. A highly emotional moment occurred as the hearse carrying the singer passed around the stadium track to the accompaniment of his song “Poljubi zemlju”.

Following his death at age 86, the Croatian government declared a National Day of Condolence. Prime Minister Andrej Plenković attended the service, praising Kovač as a cultural icon who sold over 20 million records and shaped the identity of Dalmatia and Croatia. The procession traveled through various coastal towns toward Zagreb, where he will be buried at Mirogoj.
